Wave propagation and absorption in a helicon plasma thruster and its plume

چکیده

Abstract A two-dimensional, full-wave, frequency domain, cold plasma model is used to study electromagnetic power propagation and absorption in a helicon thruster, including its far plume region surrounding space. Results show that fraction of absorbed the region, deposition source essentially unperturbed by simulation domain size, presence metallic obstacles, or density environment. An electron–cyclotron resonance (ECR) surface always exists downstream effectively prevents radiation space beyond along plume. In an overdense environmental plasma, like one expected vacuum chamber, fields are fully evanescent this transition, chamber boundary conditions affect but little wavefields before surface. absence double wave regime transition at interface between hinders accurate numerical region.

Resonant power absorption in helicon plasma sources

Helicon discharges produce plasmas with a density gradient across the confining magnetic field. Such plasmas can create a radial potential well for nonaxisymmetric whistlers, allowing radially localized helicon RLH waves. This work presents new evidence that RLH waves play a significant role in helicon plasma sources. An experimentally measured plasma density profile in an argon helicon dischar...

Plasma Properties in the Plume of a Hall Thruster Cluster

The Hall thruster cluster is an attractive propulsion approach for spacecraft requiring very high-power electric propulsion systems. Plasma density, electron temperature, and plasma potential data collected with a combination of triple langmuir probes and floating emissive probes in the plume of a low-power, four-engine Hall thruster cluster are presented. Simple analytical formulas are introdu...

Device and Plume Model of an Electrothermal Pulsed Plasma Thruster

Progress in combined device/plume modeling is presented for a Teflon-fed, pulsed plasma thruster from plasma generation to the plume far field. In this work we apply a one-dimensional unsteady model for the plasma generation and acceleration process. A new kinetic ablation algorithm is employed to calculate the Teflon ablation rate as a function of plasma parameters. A near cathode sheath model...

Wave propagation and power deposition in magnetically enhanced inductively coupled and helicon plasma sources

Magnetically enhanced inductively coupled plasma ~MEICP! and helicon sources for materials processing are of interest because of their ability to deposit power within the volume of the plasma beyond the classical skin depth. The location and manner of power deposition can vary substantially depending on the mode of operation and reactor conditions. The coupling of electromagnetic fields to the ...

Ion Thruster Plume Plasma Interactions in the Solar Wind

Ion propulsion will be used for the first time on an interplanetary spacecraft, Deep Space One (DS1), scheduled for launch in July 1998. A primary objective of New Millennium DS 1 is to flight validate solar electric propulsion (SEP) for interplanetary missions. The cruise phase of the mission will characterize the life and performance of a 30 cm xenon ion thruster and determine how its operati...
